WHO stated that Invasive Pneumococcal Disease (IPD) is estimated to kill over than two million children every year.
Starting with “only” mild pneumonia, IPD can kill infected children within 48 hours.
IPD caused by Streptococcus pneumococcus bacterium. This bacteria was airborne bacteria, so it can be everywhere around us, especially when we near the infected person.

Infection of these bacteria can cause;
Sepsis; bacterium infection trough blood stream and produce toxic compound, can lead organ failure.
Meningitis (infection of S. pneumococcus in brain fluid) this infection can kill children within 48 hours. Even if the child can survive, the brain is already damages
Pneumonia (infection in lung, causing inflammation of the lung)
Other local infection of S. pneumococcus in the ear can cause deafness if they are not treated properly.

The best way to reduce the risk of IPD is to vaccinated our children before S. pneumococcus infect our children first. Clinical study In Gambia, the vaccine was 77% effective in preventing infections caused by nine serotype of pneumococcal baceria.
FDA recommended pneumococcus vaccine (7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV)) as the only vaccine that save to use for infant and child under two years.
