The Little Nipper: Biting

Here are some tips for dealing with your baby’s biting during nursing.

Just say no! If your baby bites you during breastfeeding, pull backs quickly and tells him, “No!” or, “Ouch!” to let him know that biting hurts you. Then give him another chance to nurse.

No! No! If he bites you again, remove your breast and tell him, “No!”

Stop the feeding. If he continues to bite, put your breasts away for a while and do something else with him.

Do not take it personally. Your baby is experimenting with his mouth, and he is probably fascinated by your reaction. He will eventually learn that biting stops the flow of food, and he won’t want that to happen.

Quick tip: Aggressive Eater

My baby was really vigorous at the beginning of a feeding. When one of my nipples began to crack, I started him on the healthy side first. By the time I switched to the tender side. He had lightened up a lot. I also used nipple cream on the cracked nipple, which helped it get better.
