Checking on checkups: visiting your baby’s doctor

Medical checkups are a regular part of your baby’s overall health care. Checkups ensure that your baby’s growth and development are on schedule.

Checkups. Your baby’s first checkup occurs one to two weeks after birth. Your doctor or maternal and child health nurse will also want to do routine checkups at two months, four months, six months, nine months (optional), and twelve months.

Between checkups. Write down any questions or concerns you might have about your baby’s health or development, so you can ask your doctor about them at your next visit. If you have urgent concerns, call your doctor immediately.

Family visits. If possible, both you and your partner should attend the checkups, so both of you can learn about your baby’s health and development.

Entertainment. Bring something for your baby to play with, so she will be entertained before and during the examination.

Full stomach. If possible, feed your baby before the doctor visit, so she will be content and in a pleasant mood.

Happy face. Maintain a positive attitude about visiting the doctor, so your baby will sense your feelings and feel positive, too.
